SAIL Birthright Trip 2010

SAIL (Supports to Achieve Independent Living) is a program of JFCS with a mission to provide activities for individuals with special needs.  The SAIL Program provides a variety of social and recreational activities and life skills supports. 

What to expect from SAIL

You can expect to meet new friends, learn new skills, and have a lot of fun being a SAIL member!

Who is eligible? 

The SAIL Program is designed for young adults who:

  • Have graduated high school.
  • Are able to work competitively in the community.
  • Have the ability to live independently now or in the future.
  • Are open to meeting new friends and having fun!

Special Olympics

Special Olympics Basketball Team 2010

The SAIL Program is affiliated with Special Olympics of New Jersey.  Currently, the members participate under the team name "SAILORS" in three sports:  soccer, basketball, and softball. 

Practices are held every Monday night and are coached by local volunteers.  Games for all three sports are held throughout the state of New Jersey.  A Spring Sports Festival is held for the basketball team in Wildwood.  Summer Games are held for the entire state at the College of New Jersey over a long weekend every June. 

The SAILORS are role models and have been asked every year to represent Special Olympics at local middle schools and businesses, like TD Bank.  TD Bank is a major corporate sponsor for the Special Olympics Summer Games.  At these events, the SAILORS have spoken about the fun they have playing sports, the camaraderie they feel being part of a team and the confidence they have gained in themselves.  Many of the SAILORS involved in Special Olympics are also very involved in the SAIL Program and enjoy many of the monthly events.
