National Disability Mentoring Day

The Special Needs Department helped 91 special needs students from nine area high schools visit local businesses as part of National Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) on October 21, 2009.  Students heard presentations, took tours, and shadowed employee hosts to see how they performed their jobs.

This was the second year that JFCS has served as local coordinator for Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester counties.  Host employees included:  Lockheed Martin, the National Weather Service, American Water Company, Trenton Thunder, Rowan University, Holman Infiniti, Cherry Hill Holiday Inn, and PNC.

"We are thrilled that so many students were able to get involved this year," said Barbara, Director of the Special Needs Department. "Last year, Holman Infiniti was so impressed with our students' abilities that they have served as a work site for our clients ever since.  DMD is a great opportunity for local businesses to get a better understanding of the potential employment possibilities for these students."

National Disability Mentoring Day is a program of The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), which connects nearly 20,000 students and job seekers to thousands of employers each year and takes place in more than 300 locations in every state and in 23 foreign countries.
