Barriers to Leaving

Once abuse has been disclosed, leaving the relationship is not necessarily the next step.  Escaping domestic violence is difficult and complicated, and can take years.

• She may fear threats that he'll harm her or her loved ones if she leaves.
• She may choose to remain in the relationship as she struggles with fear, feelings of inadequacy, self-blame, low self-esteem, post traumatic stress, and/or physical injuries as a result of the abuse.
• Without adequate money, housing, education, job security, and/or family support, she may feel that she cannot make it on her own.
• In spite of the physical, emotional, and/or financial harm done, she may still love her abuser.
• An abuser often threatens to take his victim's children away.
