Yad b'Yad Breast Cancer Support Program

Yad b'YadThe Yad b'Yad (Hand in Hand) Breast Cancer Support Program connects newly diagnosed patients with resources to help them navigate throughout their diagnosis and recovery period.  Whether it be by helping a woman with her needs surrounding hair loss or connecting a newly diagnosed patient with a volunteer breast cancer survivor, Yad b'Yad can help.  This hands-on program supports individuals and families while educating them about breast health.  Additionally, Yad b'Yad connects uninsured and under-insured women to mammography screening.

There is no fee for any Yad b'Yad support or educational opportunities.  For more information about our cancer support services, please call Margie at 856-424-1333 or email cancersupport@jfedsnj.org.

Support for Newly Diagnosed Patients

Newly diagnosed patients are connected to the resources that meet their specific needs.  This might mean pairing a newly diagnosed woman with a volunteer breast cancer survivor who understands what she is going through because she has experienced it herself.  Or it might mean referring a woman to a local support group.  In addition to these individualized types of support, JFCS also provides additional information, resources, and educational workshops via our podcasts that will help guide individuals through this challenging time.

The Importance of Mammography Screening

New Jersey ranks among the top ten states in the country for both incidence and mortality rates for breast cancer.  Particularly at risk are the low-income, the working poor, and uninsured women.

There are 586,300 uninsured women living in New Jersey, and 12,511 women living in Camden County live at or below 250% of the poverty level.  Only 48% of women in Camden County reported having a mammogram within the past year.

JFCS is working with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central and South Jersey affiliate to best reach women in need of yearly screening.  Please take a short survey here!

Call Margie at 856-424-1333 to find out how you can get a FREE mammogram
if you are age 40 or over and are uninsured.

Why should you call?

  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for all women.
  • More than 80% of breast cancers are found in women who have no family history.

Why should you get a mammogram?

  • A mammogram can find breast cancer up to two years before it can be felt.
  • A mammogram is easy to arrange and may cost little or nothing.

The American Cancer Society recommends ALL women follow these guidelines:

  • Yearly mammograms starting at age 40.
  • A clinical breast exam (CE) as part of a periodic health exam about every three years for women in their 20's and 30's, and every year for women 40 and older.
  • Women should report any breast change promptly to their health care provider.  Breast self-examination (BSE) is an option for women starting in their 20's.

Friend to Friend

Friend to Friend is an outreach program for women over the age of 65 who live in assisted living communities, which educates them about the importance of mammography at every age.  In addition to providing this education, we help these women schedule their appointments for free mammograms and provide free transportation to their appointment site.
